The Province has announced funding aimed at closing the gap between aboriginal  health  and that of  other British Columbians.

$400,000 in provincial funding will  go towards four projects that will strengthen links between on- and off-reserve health programming, facilitate community
control of Aboriginal health plans and support Aboriginal youth in healthy living through the promotion of sports and recreation and the development of targeted drug and alcohol strategies.

Specifics are:

  • A two-year pilot project between the Penticton Indian Band and the Penticton Friendship Centre to coordinate on- and off-reserve programs and better serve    the needs of the Aboriginal population in their region.
  • A two-year pilot project to support the Kelowna Friendship Centre as it takes the lead developing B.C.'s first urban community Aboriginal Health Plan.
  • A two-year collaborative project to develop a youth-oriented Aboriginal Sports Recreation and Physical Activity Strategy.
  • A two-year collaborative project to develop an Aboriginal Mental Health and Addictions Strategy. Currently, only 15 out of 24 friendship centres in B.C. are  staffed with drug and alcohol counsellors, and there is no Aboriginal youth-specific treatment centre in B.C.

Could someone please explain why it seems that everytime we turn around, there are special programs being set up for First Nations people?
This is a perfect example.
Why can they not be part of the same healthcare programs as the rest of us?
Why does our government insist on treating them in a different manner than the rest of us?
Why does there always have to be that line in the sand that says you are "diffent" than the rest of us?
They are not different, they are just the same as everyone else.
No worse,no better.
I am really starting to believe that the way the our governments are treating these people is a major part of the problem!
How about treating them like they are just "people" instead of a special needs case!
I really do feel sorry for the way they are being dealt with!
Give them back their dignity!
Government sanctioned racism.

The GOV likes it this way because it creates work for all of thier lawyer buddies.
Andyfreeze: "Why can they not be part of the same healthcare programs as the rest of us?"

Yes, indeed!

Aren't we all human beings of the same species homo sapiens? Does an MRI scan show any internal differences? What about all the other standard tests, glucose, urine, blood, stool, PSA, etc...?

Hmmm...

Well I must say this is just another day of cash cow handouts, and a further division of all people.

There is a good healthcare plan in place for everyone now.
Sickness knows no race or gender! Our hospitals and drug treatment centres help everyone.

If we are giving away my money whom is going to police the way that it's being administered?

Who will monitor (audit) the funding and assure it’s used in the manner in which it was intended?

There was just a local protest about money handling problems last week was there not?

I say this is becoming beyond BS and I feel like I’m being discriminated! I wonder if I can sue someone?
People please do not be so ignorant. Your understanding of First Nations issues is bleak and mis-informed. I am Aboriginal and let me share my insights. I also am Univiersity educated; for those of you who may think my opinion doesn't count.

I cannot believe the comments I am seeing on this blog and I am thoroughly disgusted. You should all be ashamed to think that 'First Nations' I repeat First Nations people are not deserving of a better life, a healthier life. Before the Non-Aboriginal colonizers came to North America, Aboriginal people were healthy in all aspects of the Spritual, Mental, Emotional, and Physical. Today, we are raped of our lands, our language, our heritage, our history, our stories, our people, our elders, our children, our futures.

It is our 'Inherent Right' as a people who signed Treaty's with the governments where promises were made that today are still not being followed through upon. Our health as a peoples is the poorest in the nation, look at the statistics, do some research - GO TO YOUR OWN GOVERNMENT WEBSITES AND PUNCH IN ABORIGINAL HEALTH...

We have the highest poverty rates, the hightest suicide rates, the lowest literacy levels, poor education, and the list goes on and on and on. I am fed up! I am tired of being sick and tired. I am tired of hearing ridiculous comments such as the ones posted on this website! Who can you sue? You feel like you are being discriminated against!???

As Aboriginal people we deserve 1 trillion times more than what the Government provides and currently takes in natural resources from our lands. Taxation is all a sham and I don't pay taxes!

If you want to know more about our history and how the government doesn't provide anything close to what we deserve please read the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples and the Indian Act. These two documents will give you some good insight as to why we deserve more and how we still want to hang on to Archaic Acts and some how the government thinks they are doing a good thing?
Look because i do not support your argument does not make me ignorant or a racist! I do not support your group’s way of thinking and i am entitled to my own opinion. I am sorry that you feel that we all should embrace your way of viewing this whole problem.

We do not need special healthcare, sport activities, arenas and every other facility for one certain race.

This is Canada, Multi cultural remember that. This division of cultures is not doing any of us any good. Raising our children separate from other groups in my opinion only creates non-tolerance and possible racism.

At some point this all is going to come to a head and it can be prevented. Yes, many comments tend to get heated, but, that is from all sides and it must also be viewed at as an indicator that many are not too happy.

So in closing i stand firm, you are no greater or lesser than i and are not entitled to more or less either.
First Nations people are always so quick to condem us all as racists and there is no doubt, some probably are.
But most are not.
Some are simply frustrated with constantly being told that we are not doing or giving enough for first nations people and that we are mostly all "ignorant".
If that is the case, then perhaps it is time to tell us what first nations people actually do want if so much that we do now is so wrong?
How many times has that same question been asked without ever being answered?
A "trillion times more than the governemnt provides"?
Because the government is in fact, the people of Canada.
So what is it that we are NOT doing?
What do first nations people require that is so different from what the rest of us want?
If they do not want the same homes, jobs, eduction,or material things that we all seem to want in our everyday lives, then what DO they want?
Because I for one am tired of being condemed for simply asking that question?
And the part about taxes being a sham?
Explain then, what the alternative to taxes is, if we are all to survive in this world?
What would we all have without taxes that provide the basics of life to us all?

Don't use the word "racist" too often. Ya might wear it out.
Right... toe the line or you're a racist.

"Before the Non-Aboriginal colonizers came to North America, Aboriginal people were healthy in all aspects of the Spritual, Mental, Emotional, and Physical."
Mind you, life expectancy was about 30, to say nothing of the child-mortality rate, starvation, freezing, inter-tribal wars, slavery.... those were the days, eh? Such an unrealistic, pie in the sky, image of your culture's history.

"As Aboriginal people we deserve 1 trillion times more than what the Government provides..."
Here we come to the cause of your oppositions stance... the sence of entitlement based on race. Have natives faced difficulties? You bet, but then so have the Irish, the Ukranians, the Chinese, and the East Indians. Do natives currently face racism? Probably, but then so too (probably) do other visible minorities. How is it that the Chinese child who also faces racism, and has to deal with a horrible history can excel in school and society, while a native child does not, despite the millions of dollars spent on programs designed to help native people exclusively?
Nothing will improve for native people until they take responsibility for their own situation and work towards improving it. Native youth suicide a problem (and it is), then native people need to deal with the drugs, alcohol, abuse and rape that is epidemic in first nations communities. Natives don't graduate at the same rate as other kids? Then the parents of these children need to ensure that their kids take their education seriously. Natives face chronic unemployment? Head to the oil patch... if it's good enough for an unemployed Maritimer, then it's good enough for an employed native from Takla. Natives deal with poorer health? Then these people need to eat right (Canada Health Guide, free online) and exercise (Y membership is free if you volunteer), quit smoking, drinking and drugs.

"Taxation is all a sham and I don't pay taxes!"
If you don't pay taxes, you don't have the right to complain how tax dollars are being spent.

Grow up, take responsibility for your life, and quit throwing a temper tantrum when you don't get what you want.
Go out get a job, pay taxes, go to the doctor, buy a new truck, take Johnny to the hockey game, get the idea?
Nobody owes nobody nothing. I was born here.
I work and pay taxes like ALL people SHOULD be doing. If everyone was paying taxes then my taxes would be lower. I am sick and tired of you lazy people expecting handouts while sitting on your lazy butts crying I don't have enough. Go out get a job and stop being such a sponge on the backs of us working people.
Like someone just said "this will all come to a head one day unless something is done".
I am waiting for that day.
GET A BLOODY JOB.
