Where is Lets Go P.G.?

The first of the current Council to  make their run for re-election  is Cameron Stolz.
The official nomination period doesn't actually start for another  two weeks,  and with the exception of Councillor Don Bassermann,  all sitting Councillors and the current Mayor are expected to  file their  papers for  re-election.
You may recall that during the last civic election, a  group called  "Let's Go P.G." pumped money into the campaigns of several candidates. In it's final financial report filed with the City, "Let's Go P.G." reported it had a balance of $3,777.63,  which the member who filed the report (Dan McLaren) said  would be used as seed money for the next civic  election.
That time is nearly upon us.
McLaren is listed as the Chairman of Let's Go P.G.  on that  financial report ( which  also bears the stamp of lawyer Grant Zimmerman) and was the single largest contributor having put $5 grand into the fund.  Some of the other names of contributors  to Let's Go P.G. may sound familiar;
  • Gordon Langer $1,500.00,
  • David McWalter $1,000.00 and
  • Grant Zimmerman who put $400.00 into the pot

In all, the Let’s Go Prince George group raised $42,650.00  and spent $38,872.37 supporting 5 civic candidates, three of whom were successful in their bid; Garth Frizzell, Brian Skakun, and Shari Green.

Councillor Garth Frizzell received $7,356.50 from the fund and a further $2,090.00 from Dan McLaren for signs, for a total of $9,446.50. Frizzell also received a $200.00 contribution from Heather Oland who was later listed as a Director of Commonwealth Campuses on June 29th-2010. The total contribution was $9,646.50 of the $20, 217.82 total spent by Frizzell in his election bid.
Between Let’s Go PG and L&M Engineering (a company controlled by David McWalter), Councillor Brian Skakun received more than one half of the total money he spent on his campaign from these two sources. In his declaration Skakun says he spent a total of $13,295.65. He received $7,356.36 from Let's Go PG and a further $200.00 from David McWalter for a total of $7,556.36.
Councillor Shari Green also was supported by Let's Go PG; she received $7,356.36 from their fund along with a further $200.00 from David McWalter. Green spent $21,102.60 on her campaign.
Councillors Krause, Basserman, Wilbur and Stolz did not benefit from the "Let's Go P.G." fund. David McWalter contributed $200.00 to each of them for their campaign.
Debora Munoz, received $100.00 from Dan and Kim McLaren.
Mayor Dan Rogers received a contribution of $1,000.00 from David McWalter. Rogers spent $63,722.81 on his campaign.

On June 29th-2010 , about a year and a half after the  elected Council was sworn in, Commonwealth Campuses changed its board of directors to include Dan McLaren, David McWalter, Heather Oland, Dan Gialleonardo, Don Kehler and Gordon Langer.

So what does "Let's Go P.G. have planned for this election? Opinion 250 has placed a call to Dan McLaren for details on how the left over "seed money" will be put to use for this civic election, our call had not been returned by publication time.
I'm Meisner and that's one man's opinion.

Great work Ben! Not that I had any doubt about who run's this town.
"So what does "Let's Go P.G. have planned for this election"

The question I have, other than distributing money, what did "Let's Go P.G" have planned for the last election?

In other words, what was their expectation of the Councillors that they supported to the extent they did. Were the others offered money and it was not taken?

More importantly, were their expectations fulfilled? Did they get value for their money? Were there others they supported who did not get elected? Were there others who ran who they should have supported and may have done better for the City?

Does it really matter who sits in the seats? How many times in the past has there been a significant change of the guard with high expectation by those who got them there, and they ended up being duds? Maybe I am being too harsh by calling them that, but just because people are known in the community or have run or are running successful businesses does not mean they make good Councillors.

Then, of course, there is the question of what are good Councillors? What are our expectations of a Councillor? They are not magicians.

So there are a few business people who are backing others? The question I have is why are they not running themselves? Dan McLaren, I think, is the only one who has run for office. Obviously he did not succeed. Is he a successful business man? He and others, with the artistic help of Paul Zanette sure went much further than anyone else to put some ideas out there for what part of downtown could look like if we had some growth here. I applaud them for that. So, “if only”, is what we saw. We cannot expect them to do anything more than that. They are not elected provincially. I really do not think we could get two more enthusiastic people into the seats we currently have. Certainly not from the names of the “Let's Go P.G.” group.

Which of the current Councillors and which of the new ones who have sort of unofficially put their name forward are there that can bring this City to actually start to grow again? We have had 30 years of this no growth. I do not think this City can control the bigger picture of what happens here with respect to job growth other than to lobby those who can control that. I am waiting for Pat’s jobs announcement. So far, it seems that Clark’s preliminary announcements indicate more effort to get the Central and Northern part of the province going. But no one really has a long range plan, do they? There is no OCP type 10 year plan from the province.

So, what is my expectation of a Council? A variety of interests need to be represented. We have typically had that. A Council needs to make sure the Administration is working well and they must allow them to do their work. I do not see them doing that. Far too often has planning especially come forward with one recommendation and Council did not go that way. To me that means there is a disconnect between the direction that has been set by Council and what the department concerned delivers for consideration. That disconnect needs to disappear.

If we look at the City as a business, and that is certainly the way one needs to look at it in part if one wants some business to come here rather than elsewhere, then one needs to look at the marketing department. That is IPG plus planning. Who are the “customers” that want to buy the notion of putting a business into PG or expanding an existing business in PG, what do they need to help them make that decision, and how can we provide that for them.

We have to support IPG. We have to support the planning department of this city. As people who are shareholders in the “business” of Prince George, we need to know that those two organizations are working well. We need to have measurable outcomes and we need to make sure that they have enough successes to make this city the best intermediate sized livable city there is in BC, at the least.

We have no measuring stick for that. Dr. Alex Michalos used to provide us with a bit of that. We need better “report cards” on Council, Administration, and IPG.
I am sorry middle finger, are you referring to Cameron Stolz?

"In all, the Let’s Go Prince George group raised $42,650.00 and spent $38,872.37 supporting 5 civic candidates, three of whom were successful in their bid"

So who were the other two? Looks like they likely received the same $7,356 as the other three from "let's go pg".

Would they have been better on Council than the three that did get in?

Of course the name is associated with the two DBIA gatherings. How long has it been since the first one, 5 years or so? How has Shari Green, for instance, done with that? Not to put all the pressure on her, how has anyone done with that?

Lots of input for 30 years - see, it's not just the current group - no action.

We have had the Barton building built a little while ago. Nice building. Local business man investing in his home town. Nice to see.

The Scotia building has been renovated inside and now outside over the last 4 or 5 years. Local business family investing in their home town. Nice to see.

The Chances building has been remade from a garish looking building to a much more toned down building that fits in better with a respected downtown look (whatever that is, LOL). Local business man/group investing in his/their home town. Nice to see as well.

Telus and Fortis bringing in, hopefully, more stable call centre operations. Also nice to see.

Just some examples.

So, who can take a bow on this and past Councils, whether Mayor or Councillors, on City Administration, current or past, on IPG, current or past, for innitiating the interests by those individuals and groups to take the actions they have taken? Anyone? If they can, then they should step forward so that we can celebrate their success. We do not do enough of that.

We know where the germ of the idea of UNBC came from. We know where the push for better medical service in the Central Interior came from. However, like all things that deal with history in PG, we tend to forget very quickly.

So, who are the real leaders of this community that have taken some giant leaps forward?
Just a note to the folks that run this online paper. Perhaps you should consider limiting the amount of characters a single individual can contribute to the comments section per article. It seems certain posters love to watch themselves type and monopolize the converstations.

Better yet, why don't you give them a job writing articles so that they have less time on their hands generally and can still fulfil their need to see their words published. That way everyone can have a say.

I'm Sine, and that's my 2 cents worth for today!
Gus,LOL, no I wasn't refering to "Jump Ship Stolz". Local name's.......I can't come up with any, point taken. If Heather Oland can work for IPG (essentially a city employee) and be a director of Commonwealth Campuses Inc, I don't see any reason why the rest of them couldn't run in the civic election.
Sine Nomine, I believe you have the wrong idea. This is an open forum but there are nations today that prohibit communications among its people and they’re called DICTATORSHIPS. If I may suggest your idea of censoring the contributors is not to popular so you should probably find another forum more to your needs.

And Gus those are thought provoking ideas that you have given us. After all boring people talk about people. Average people talk about things and Intelligent people talk about ideas.
Cheers
Sine Nomine, you "sound" just like one of the Councillors I know. Just trying to put my finger on which one.
You better be wearing flame proof underwear if you dare make the suggestion that certain posters dominate most of the threads with long-winded posts. They know who they are.
I love short posts.

Too many long posts and I run out of space on my computer screen.
I love short posts.

Too many long posts and my brain starts to fry.
I love short posts.

Too many long posts and mine get lost.
Gus: LMAO. Please, anyone who wants to add their two cents or (inflation) Loonies worth, please continue, we are a free country. And Gus, although I may not always agree with what you're saying in your short winded posts, they are very informative, intelligent and entertaining.
